Today, corporate wellness programs are viewed by many as the "new benefit" in compensation packages for all employees. A recent survey suggests that health club memberships now rank among the most sought-after employee benefits.
A typical American now works 47 hours a week, according to the U.S. Labor Department. That is nearly a working month more per year than the most recent generation. In response, an estimated 80 to 90 percent of large corporations in the United States have become more focused on keeping their employees fit and healthy through corporate wellness programs - the "new benefit" that is taking its place alongside medical care and 401(k) retirement programs.
Companies of all shapes and sizes are striving to make physical fitness part of their employees' lives. Aside from the proven health benefits of exercise, physically fit employees can also handle physical work tasks better, deal with stressful situations more easily and tend to be less susceptible to illness and injuries.
Across the country, leading companies are seeing the proven benefits of corporate fitness programs: better attitudes among employees, increased productivity, decreased absenteeism, better coping skills, and over the long term, financial savings through lower health care costs.
Whether your company is large or small, whether it is an office or a manufacturing setting, Steve Tylee Fitness, LLC at "The Studio" has the resources, experience and expertise to develop a corporate fitness program that will bring results. Prevention is our primary goal. What we are able to do is provide a company with the kind of program it needs to help prevent on-the-job injuries and improve the overall wellness of employees.
The individualized approach we adopt at Steve Tylee Fitness, LLC means working closely with the employer, learning more about the physical demands of the work and the goals the company wants to achieve.
Employee surveys can reveal more about the type of program that would be most appropriate as well as the individual needs of employees. Depending on the nature of the company's work, several different components of fitness may be tested, including aerobic capacity, muscle strength, muscle endurance, body composition and flexibility. We also work with employees who have special conditions, such as back pain or diabetes. Once we have the company on board, we work closely with individual employees, educating them on fitness and nutrition, measuring progress, developing individualized exercise plans, teaching the proper ways to exercise, following up and answering questions.
How the Program Works:
Exercise is at the heart of the Corporate Fitness Program. Employees are treated as individuals with their own needs and goals. And employers are kept informed on participants' progress without compromising confidentiality.
A. Walk-Through Survey:
If you would like, a member of our staff can conduct a "walk-through" survey of your company. This visit helps us see what physical challenges your type of work environment presents and what unique areas may need addressing in your company's fitness program.
B. Initial Consultation:
Each participating employee will receive a private consultation with a Fitness Consultant. This session will cover personal and family health history, physical limitations, expectations and goal setting.
C. Fitness Evaluation/Interpretation:
After the initial consultation, our staff will administer fitness evaluations to determine baseline fitness levels for each participating employee. We will base this evaluation on the physical demands of the work each person does. For employees with less physical jobs, we will measure cardio respiratory endurance, body composition and flexibility. For employees with more physically demanding jobs, we will measure muscle strength and endurance. We will explain these procedures thoroughly to your employees and keep the findings confidential.
D. Individual Exercise Prescription:
Utilizing the information from the initial consultation and fitness evaluation, we will create an Individual Exercise Prescription (IEP) for each participating employee.
Exercise sessions will include:
Warm-up activities
Aerobic conditioning
Toning
Strength training
Flexibility exercises
Cool-down
In addition, we will recommend an appropriate number of exercise sessions per week based on individual needs and abilities. By following these guidelines, employees can meet their fitness goals, while you reap the rewards of a healthier workforce.
E. Exercise Training Sessions:
Our Fitness Trainers will train your employees before letting them embark on their IEPs. Training sessions will teach safe, effective exercise techniques and educate your employees on training intensity, frequency and progression to maximize results and reduce injuries.
F. Re-evaluation and Follow-up:
Periodic re-evaluations will be scheduled after three months and then every six months after that. These sessions are useful for assessing progress and making any necessary changes to individual training programs. Follow-up meetings will be scheduled periodically as well to provide an opportunity for your employees to ask questions and receive additional information about their fitness program.
G. Periodic Progress Reports for Individuals and Employers:
As the employer, you will receive detailed reports on your employee group's participation rates and fitness results. These reports will provide you with overall information about the group, without compromising the confidentiality of any of the participants. Employees will receive reports on their initial fitness level and subsequent improvement as determined by ongoing fitness evaluations. If you have specific reporting needs, please let us know, and we'll work to customize your reports for you.
Finding Balance: The Keys to Maintaining A Healthy Workplace
Health can be broken down into five basic elements: physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual. While physical health is perhaps the most commonly considered of these components, balancing all five is vital to achieving optimal health on the job and off.
Physical health refers to the body's physiological condition. Smoking, physical activity, alcohol, nutrition and other lifestyle choices can all affect physical wellbeing. Emotional health, the mental state of being, includes the stresses in a person's life, how one reacts to stresses and the ability to relax and devote time to leisure activities. Growing evidence links emotional health to health care utilization, susceptibility to disease and unhealthy lifestyle practices.
Social health refers to the ability to get along with others, including family members, friends, co-workers and neighbors.
Spiritual health involves the condition of the spirit. Having a sense of purpose, being able to give and receive love and feeling charity or goodwill toward others are all manifestations of spiritual health. For some, religious faith may be included in this category as well.
Intellectual health relates to achievements in life that occur through work, school, community service or hobbies. The relationships between education and healthy lifestyle practices; unemployment and disease; socioeconomic status and medical care utilization are all manifestations of intellectual health's impact on overall health.
As a boss, it is important to encourage your employees to achieve a balance in all of these areas. Because of the intricate ways in which these elements interweave with one another, many employers choose to work with professionals like Steve Tylee Fitness, LLC at "The Studio"to get their programs started.
